The Piercing
Urge was established in 1991
to meet the small but growing need for safe installation of body
jewellery in Melbourne, Australia. The gay and lesbian communities,
along with those living as part of the alternative culture scene at
that time generated much of this initial need. The aim was to provide
an environment where people could go to find out more about this
emerging trend, and explore their own desires in the world of body
piercing.
During the
early 90’s much of the piercing being performed at The Piercing Urge
was closely linked to the sexual aspects of body piercing as part of
the gay and lesbian, S&M, gothic and leather lifestyles, as
well as older straight couples looking to add some extra fun to their
sex life. It was also during this time that we saw piercing becoming a
part of commitment ceremonies for couples (far more useful than a ring
on a finger) and to signify rites of passage marking completed or
beginning stages of life.
The
Piercing Urge piercing
studio is now also home to the practical aspects of our Training
Courses. All Trainees learn how to pierce at the studio, and have
full access to the amazing facilities located there, including our fully equipped Course Room.
